VANDENBERG SPACE FORCE BASE, Calif. — An unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile has been launched from California to check the protection system, the U.S. Air Drive World Strike Command stated.
The Minuteman III missile lifted off from Vandenberg House Drive Base at 11:01 p.m. Thursday and its reentry car traveled about 4,200 miles (6,800 kilometers) over the Pacific Ocean to the Kwajalein Atoll within the Marshall Islands, an Air Drive assertion stated.
Whereas the check occurred amid U.S. considerations about North Korea’s missile exams and the transit of a Chinese language spy balloon throughout the USA, the Air Drive stated the launch was routine.
“Such exams have occurred over 300 instances earlier than, and this check just isn’t the results of present world occasions,” the assertion stated.
The Minuteman III system has been in service for many years. The Air Drive plans to switch it with a brand new missile known as the Sentinel.
“Till full functionality is achieved within the mid-2030s, the Air Drive is dedicated to making sure Minuteman III stays a viable deterrent,” the service stated.
