The sailor discovered lifeless on the San Diego-based plane provider Carl Vinson Sunday was a 22-year-old petty officer from Oklahoma, the Navy mentioned in an announcement Monday.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Darren Collins was discovered unresponsive on board the ship at its homeport berth at Naval Air Station North Island early Sunday. He was pronounced lifeless at 6:23 a.m., the Navy mentioned.
Collins’ dying is underneath investigation. The Navy mentioned there aren’t any indications of foul play or that the sailor died by suicide.
Capt. P. Scott Miller, the commanding officer of the Vinson, mentioned Collins was a “proficient younger man.”
“My deepest condolences exit to the Collins household on this time of tragic loss,” Miller mentioned in an announcement. “As shipmates we grieve the premature passing of a proficient younger man. We are going to proceed to supply assist to the Vinson crew and the Collins household.”
Collins joined the Navy in 2019 and reported to the ship in October 2020, the Navy mentioned.
A Carl Vinson spokesperson, reached by e-mail Monday, declined to say the place on the ship Collins was discovered, whether or not he lived on board or was working over the weekend, citing the continuing investigation.
