MEMPHIS, Tenn. — U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee has launched a invoice to call the U.S. Division of Veterans Affairs hospital in Memphis after a World Conflict II fighter pilot who was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen.
Cohen’s invoice seeks to call the VA Medical Middle in Memphis after Lt. Col. Luke J. Weathers Jr., Cohen’s workplace stated Monday.
Weathers, who was Black, attended highschool in Memphis and volunteered in 1942 to coach at Tuskegee Army Air Subject in Alabama. He joined the Tuskegee Airmen, the U.S. Army’s first Black aviators.
Weathers started escorting bombers over Italy in 1944 with the all-Black 332nd Fighter Group, often known as the “Crimson Tails.” He’s credited with taking pictures down a number of enemy airplanes, together with two German fighter planes whereas escorting a broken B-24 bomber, Cohen’s workplace stated.
Weathers acquired the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Congressional Gold Medal and different honors. He served as an air site visitors controller in Memphis and died in 2011 at 90 years previous.
