George Cross seventy fifth Anniversary – Corporal Mark Wright

To mark the seventy fifth anniversary of the George Cross 14 recipients of the hardly ever awarded gallantry medal have gathered in London.

Instituted by King George the VI on the twenty fourth of September 1940 it is the best such award that may be given to civilians.

For members of the Armed Forces it ranks just under the Victoria Cross (VC) and is awarded for acts of maximum bravery outwith the direct area of fight.

Bob and Jem Wright’s son Mark was awarded a posthumous George Cross after the 27-year-old Corporal died in 2006 whereas trying to rescue injured comrades from a minefield in Afghanistan.

Corporal Wright’s brave story fashioned the idea of the 2014 movie Kajaki.
