The Estonian authorities on 8 December amended the statutes of the defence forces to create a division as a structural unit of the defence forces, as agreed on the NATO summit in Madrid.
“This can be a historic resolution, which on the one hand exhibits the event of our defence forces, but in addition its integration with NATO,” the Estonian defence minister, Hanno Pevkur, stated. “The institution of a division considerably will increase our defence and resilience.”
With the modification of the statutes, the minister of defence is given the suitable to nominate a division commander. The appointment relies on the proposal of the pinnacle of the defence forces.
The composition of the division consists of the first and 2nd infantry brigades, the Logistics Battalion and the Headquarters and Sign Battalion in addition to the allied brigade, which, in response to earlier agreements, is the brigade designated by the UK for the defence of Estonia.
“The division creates higher alternatives than immediately for planning and practising the navy defence of Estonia and the broader Baltic area throughout the framework of NATO. This creates alternatives for the fast use of the forces and capabilities positioned right here and people incoming for reinforcement,” the commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, Lieutenant Common Martin Herem, stated.
A wartime unit
“The institution of divisional headquarters and an entire division is an enormous problem. To do that, we have now to reorganise the present headquarters of the defence forces and another subdivisions of the defence forces. Within the coaching of the division, we’re supported by allies from the UK and america. The UK has determined to contribute to the division with its models.”
A division is a wartime unit and a completely working structural unit, the principle job of which is to plan and execute navy operations with the models throughout the composition and briefly subordinated inside its space of accountability. The division’s operational space covers your entire territory of Estonia.
If obligatory, the division may be transferred to the NATO chain of command with the command authority of the commander of the defence forces.
