Designed by Northrop Grumman, the RQ-4 World Hawk is a large-scale Unmanned Aerial Automobile (UAV) utilized by the US Air Drive (USAF) and Navy branches of service for long-range/high-endurance intelligence-gathering, goal identification and common reconnaissance. Its mission is to offer a broad spectrum of ISR assortment functionality to help joint combatant forces in worldwide peacetime, contingency and wartime operations.
World Hawk developed as an Superior Idea Expertise Demonstration in 1995. It has been deployed operationally to help abroad contingency operations since November 2001. Within the RQ-4 identify, the “R” is the Division of Protection designation for reconnaissance and “Q” means unmanned plane system. The “4” refers back to the collection of purpose-built remotely piloted plane programs.
